TOXIC POLLUTION OF THE GROUNDS ON WHERE WE WALK, SIT, PLAY AND LIVE, EVERYDAY OF OUR LIVES

TOXIC POLLUTION IN OUR PLAYGROUND

This refers to parks, playgrounds and recreation places for us, and our children.  In the parks where vegetation and trees abound, pesticides such as fungicides, DDT, insecticides, herbicides, etc. are definitely used to control mosquitoes, alphids, caterpillars and other enemies of plants and to control the growth of unwanted plants such as weeds.  Fertilizers are added to encourage the growth of desired plants and vegetation by whatever means.

Little children put the contaminated grass or flowers into their mouths or even ingested them innocently without realising the poison coating on the plants.  They rolled over the grass and pluck other types of vegetation and flowers exposing and coating the hand, feet and body.  Sometimes even the adults do the same as little children do without realising the consequences.  In the playgrounds when old swings and slides are still available, the old paint most probably contains lead compounds and the children, after the swing will most probably handle food in the hands which contain tiny fragments of lead paint and eat them along with their food or fruits.  Even the swimming pool is not spared as many pools use chlorine for keeping the water safe from bacterials and germs but the chlorinated water is also ingested by swimmers, especially children during the course of swimming or learning to swim, which leads to stomach irritation.  Irritation of the eye also accounts for many red eyes of swimmers who dive or swim under water.

TOXIC POLLUTION IN OUR OFFICE

In the office, the toxic pollution ranges from cigarette smokes to Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs).  Walking into the office, the first thing that hits us are the cigarette or cigar smokes that hit us like a wall - the stinking overnight stench that was and is there all the time.  Next, we will be exposed to deadly EMFs from the rows and rows of fluorescent lamps overhead, necessary to illuminate the office.  Then our personal death warrant - the personal computer with its monitor exuding lethal amount of EMFs and then the multitudes of electrical machines, such as the photocopier, the printer, the coffee maker, the heater or the air-conditioner, the electronic calculator, the paper shredder, the fax machine and on and on, each item adding to the staggering dosages of EMFs continuously bombarding the office worker.  Besides that the air in the office is also filled with formaldehyde from pressed wood products, asbestos from insulating and fire-retardant building materials, biological contaminants from dirty ventilation, air-conditioning plant or moist wells, ceilings and carpets.  Pesticides introduced into the environmental air by office cleaners.  This list is endless.

TOXIC POLLUTION IN OUR OWN HOME

Our home is the most dangerous place as it is observed by environmentalist, where most accidents occurred and where toxic pollution abounds.  Homes, especially those of ground level are exposed to high levels of Radon gas seeped in through the basement, the floor boards, the cracks in the floor, etc.  The indoor air quality is also affected by biological contaminants from bacterial, viruses, mildew, molds, animal dander, cat saliva, cockroaches, dust-mites and even urine from rats and mice.  Combustion products, such as carbon monoxide, wood smoke and many toxic elements come from the fire place, unvented kerosene, gas stoves and wood stoves.

The very household products helping to make our lives easier, such as cleaning agents, waxing and varnishing contain organic solvents which contain potentially harmful substances that contribute to toxic pollution in our home.  The multitude of home appliances to make life easier contribute dangerous levels of EMFs, such as the lighting system, the electric kettle, the iron, the washing machine, the radio, the electric clock, the oven, the toaster, the electric razor, the hair dryer, the fan, and the very centre of our evening and nightlife - the TV and VCD/VCR or DVD or whatever.
Most of the food that we consumed at home are polluted as they contain pesticides, e.g. vegetables and fruits - residue from the farm pesticide spray/application.  Preservatives of canned products, meat and poultry may contain residual amount of antibiotics and hormonal growth factor introduced into them by the farmers or veterinary.

Even entry into the house brings in outdoor polluted air, contaminated by motor vehicles exhaust emission by air current when you open the door.  Introduction of contaminated and polluted dirt, dust and sand occurs when the occupant walks on the ground and the roads contaminated with toxic pollution of various types and then goes into his home.  Small babies crawling on the floor will be contaminated on their hands and in turn toxic matters will be ingested when the babies put the hands into their mouths.
